My name is Sharon Lennartson (Wakiya Waste Win) (Good Thunder Woman). I am 78 years old. I am the mother of 3 beautiful sons and 2 grandsons. I am a proud Dakota woman.

It’s difficult for me to ask for help, but my circumstances have become overwhelming and I’m reaching out with a humble heart. For 30 years, I dedicated my life to serving my community as chairwoman of Dakota Indigenous nonprofit. It was more than a job, it was my calling.

In our Dakota culture, elders are revered and respected – we are the keepers of knowledge, the guides, and the heart of our communities. It breaks my heart to find myself in a position where I'm not treated with that same respect. After three decades of tireless volunteer work, I was forced to retire. I poured my heart and soul into the community, believing I was building a legacy for future generations. Sadly, despite my years of dedicated service, the organization has decided not to provide me with a pension.

I face mounting health challenges. I battle two types of cancer - chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small B-cell lymphoma as well as congestive heart failure, severe fibromyalgia, and kidney disease. It is a physical struggle just to get out of bed, and I require assistance with many daily tasks. I’m also beginning to notice the effects of cognitive decline, which is deeply unsettling.

I am on a fixed income of Social Security disability, and now I am faced with new and unexpected expenses. The organization previously covered my car payment and insurance, as well portion of my gas expenses. With my retirement, these expenses have suddenly and unexpectedly been placed on me. I am currently exploring other sources of income, but for someone of my age and health conditions, it is not easy. My Gofundme goal is to pay off this $6,000 car loan.

I live with my two sons, both of whom provide invaluable support. My youngest son who also lives with a disability was also recently removed from his position at the organization, losing his $400 monthly income. My oldest son has been my rock, providing both daily physical assistance and financial assistance when he can. The unexpected loss of income for my youngest son, combined with my own new financial obligations has placed a tremendous burden on him.

**Every penny raised will go directly towards paying off the loan.**

Freeing up this monthly payment would lift a tremendous burden, allowing me to focus on my health and easing the financial pressure on my son. Any amount you can contribute, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated.

It's not just about the money, it's about showing an elder respect and ensuring she can live her remaining years with some measure of comfort and peace, and supporting a family who has dedicated so much to our community.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and for considering a donation. May the Creator bless you for your kindness.
