Help Sharon Stand Again: A Lifelong Giver

Sharon, a pillar in our community, now needs our help.

The Heartbreaking Reality

Imagine Sharon, 75, who has dedicated her entire life in service to others, is now bound by the painful constraints of a fractured hip. Every step she takes with her walker serves as a poignant reminder of her loss of mobility. The simplest acts of standing and sitting have transformed into tests of endurance. Her world, once bustling with community service and family love, has shrunk to the confines of her living room, punctuated by physical therapy sessions and a mountain of paperwork. The once-vibrant, independent soul can no longer drive to the store, vacuum her home, or even put on her shoes.

Moreover, her husband, living with a cognitive disability, finds himself helpless, unable to assist her with even the most basic tasks. This has further intensified her feeling of isolation and dependence.

I strive to visit and provide care as frequently as possible, but the financial and emotional toll is taking its toll on me. Currently, I am over $3,000 in debt. Despite working tirelessly, my income falls short of addressing the escalating costs of her care. The situation is dire; both of us stand on the precipice of losing everything. Witnessing the woman who has been a beacon of strength for so many, including myself, grappling with such profound dependency is heartbreaking.

A Life of Service

Sharon has dedicated her life to helping others:

  • At ASI, she not only built a program to help people with disabilities secure employment, but she also assisted in the group homes from time to time and conducted quality checks on them.
  • She founded S.A.S.S (Striving After Self Sufficiency), a company aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities to find meaningful work.
  • As a leader in community outreach at church, she organized and led numerous events, food drives, Operation Christmas Child initiatives, Halloween houses for children, and more. She was the heart and soul of these outreach programs, always going above and beyond to serve her community.

A Lifetime Mentor

In addition to her professional and community service efforts, Sharon has been a guiding force for young people in her community:

  • As a proud Girl Scout, she embraced the organization’s values, inspiring young women to become confident, courageous, and compassionate leaders.
  • Recognizing the importance of mentorship for all, she extended her nurturing spirit to the Boy Scouts. For many years, she served as a dedicated advisor and leader. Her guidance, support, and lessons have shaped numerous lives, fostering a sense of responsibility, honor, and community in the next generation.
  • These roles were not mere titles to Sharon; they were a calling. She dedicated countless hours, weekends, and summers to ensure that the scouts under her care had meaningful, enriching experiences. Her impact echoes in the lives of the many individuals she guided during these pivotal years of their development.

A Loving Mother and Grandmother

Despite the challenges of raising three children alongside an unsupportive partner, she persevered. Later, as a single mother, she admirably balanced the responsibilities of raising another child while juggling three jobs. She is a 'church mom' to everyone she meets and a doting grandmother to her six grandchildren, who leap with excitement at every opportunity to see her. She was my friend and mentor growing up, teaching me how to be both productive and selfless. Despite having few friends, Sharon is an enemy to none.

The Strain on Our Family

I am emotionally and physically exhausted. It breaks my heart to see my mom unable to afford food on Social Security. We've reshaped our lives, stretched our finances, and contorted our schedules in every conceivable way to provide her the care she so dearly requires, but it is not enough to meet the mounting costs of her care.

The Urgent Need

Time is of the essence. Sharon's condition is not just a matter of discomfort; it is a threat to her life as she knows it. They are in desperate need of immediate financial assistance to sustain her essential care.

Your immediate support will:

- Secure a full-time caregiver for Sharon. ($20,000)
- - Professional Caregiver: A dedicated professional will assist Sharon with daily tasks, ensuring she remains safe and comfortable in her home.
- - Physical Assistance: Help with mobility, including getting in and out of bed, using the restroom, and navigating her home.
- - Companionship: Beyond physical care, a caregiver provides emotional support and companionship, reducing feelings of isolation.

- Medical Equipment and Home Adjustments ($3,000)
- - Independence and Comfort: Essential equipment will offer Sharon a semblance of her former independence and comfort.
- - Government Assistance: We're actively seeking help from government agencies to address these expenses, but any assistance to ease this burden would be invaluable.

- Provide a nutritional meal service for Sharon and her husband. ($5,000)
- - Balanced Meals: Proper nutrition is crucial for Sharon's recovery and overall well-being. This will ensure that both Sharon and her husband receive balanced, nutritious meals.

- Cover living expenses and bills as Sharon’s son juggles caregiving and work. ($5,000)
- - Essential Costs: This will help cover the costs of utilities, rent or mortgage, and other essential bills as Sharon’s son juggles caregiving and work.

Total Fundraising Goal: $33,000

Amid adversity, Sharon clings to a vision: to continue her work with Operation Christmas Child, sowing seeds of joy and hope within a community she cherishes. Despite her tribulations, her heart remains steadfast in its pursuit of bringing happiness to others.
