The Unexpected Shape Writing Academy is a premier online writing school offering a full curriculum in personal nonfiction and memoir writing. Founded with the mission to support and amplify the voices of writers living with limitations, the Academy provides a nurturing environment where all writers are encouraged to explore their stories and develop their craft. With a focus on inclusivity and authenticity, The Unexpected Shape Writing Academy is dedicated to shaping the next generation of writers who challenge, inspire, and transform the literary landscape.

We have been fortunate enough to have sponsors such as the Disability Visibility project and a private donor give to recently sponsor as many as 15 fellowships. But in going through hundreds of applications, we are aware that the need for fellowships far outweighs what we can offer.

This GoFundMe is an experiment in reaching out to the literary community (& elsewhere) to fund 10 fellowship recipients to be able to study at the Academy for six months each.

The Unexpected Shape Writing Academy is committed to fostering a supportive and enriching environment where writers can thrive. As these fellows embark on their creative journeys, they will receive mentorship, access to an extensive curriculum, and the opportunity to engage in a dynamic community of writers.

We hope that by creating this GoFundMe, people who are only able to contribute smaller amounts of money—instead of a full fellowship sponsorship—will be able to take part in creating our next batch of fellowships.
