My name is Shannon. I recently took in a furbaby, her name is Mavis!
I have had her officially since July 24th. Mavis has showed concerning symptoms which prompted an urgent vet visit not long after getting her. I hadn't observed her eating in about 24 hours, she was sleeping constantly, wasn’t defacating, orangish brown urine, popping noise when breathing, had yellow gums, yellow nasal discharge & was sneezing, warm belly and ears, and limping on back left leg (mainly) but right one also. Overall seemed very lethargic. When we saw the vet, with a physical exam and description of the symptoms she was experiencing, the vet suspected she has Feline Infectious Peritonitis. There is no definitive test for FIP but it is diagnosed based on diagnostic testing and/or clinical symptoms. He said she may have fluid accumulation around organs (wet version of FIP), yellow tint to her ears (sign of liver problems). She has a big round belly, but is boney which is likely due to fluid accumulation in chest/abdominal cavity. She was given antibiotics & steroid but hasn’t shown hardly any improvement. FIP is a devastating, fatal disease that affects cats. FIP is an mutated inflammatory immune response in cats who have been infected with feline coronavirus. Without treatment, even in weeks this disease can be deadly. Treatment is VERY expensive.
Please help me help my furbaby, I cannot do this alone & as we know especially in kittens under 1 year, they can decline very quickly.
UPDATE: After another round of antibiotics that weren’t resolving her symptoms, bloodwork was supportive of FIP. We had to start treatment that night. Mavis has been in treatment since August 19th. Within the first week of treatment 2x a day, her symptoms improved immensely!! While we are 60 days into treatment, (which I wouldn’t have been able to do without the generous donations from some amazing people!) we do still have a long road to go! Mavis is back to being a playful, alert, happy kitten & I am so so grateful! Her belly is back to a normal size, her nasal discharge has went away, no more abnormal breathing sounds, she loves to eat, her toe beans and gums are pink again, ears are white and no longer yellow, & is using the bathroom like normal!
