Help Shannon get her Life Back

Hi, I am Sara McMurren. I am Shannon Brophy McMurren's daughter who shares the support of the entire family. She is a very outgoing, loving and always smiling person. She was born deaf but this has not stopped her from Swimming, shoveling snow, working in the yard and raising her 2 kids on her own. She became an Olympic Gold swimmer in her past and carried on into World Masters. She wants to keep swimming for the rest of her life and coaching swimming in the Edmonton Special Olympics. She found out 6 years ago that she has Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) and progressive Arthritis in her lower back. She was told there was nothing she can do and was forced to retire. She still tries to keep her spirits up but there are many nights of crawling out of bed with help from her family and many tears. After a 2nd MRI, 5 years apart, it is progressing and Canada will not perform the type of procedure she needs. She met with a Dr. in Puerto Vallarta and with great anticipation, he told her "IT CAN BE FIXED!". With a lot of Canadian patients going to him for help, she has come to trust him, along with her Family Dr., Chiropractor and Physio here in Edmonton has supported this decision with the confirmed prognosis. We are booking her surgery for the beginning of March 2022.

One catch. AHS will not help with the cost. We need to pay for the hospital, surgery, physio follow up, medical bills and a place to stay and recover for 3 1/2 weeks in Puerto Vallarta before she can fly home.

She has strived to help others and make them smile. She misses times that she cannot have with her 2 grand children. She misses being pain free and performing simple everyday tasks. She is not asking for help but myself and my family are asking. We want her to live her life as she always has now that we know it is possible. This is very scary for her but getting her life back means everything to her and knowing that she will not be that burden on the us in the near future.
