My name is Tommy Church, and I’m writing this as a heartbroken uncle asking for help for my brother’s daughter, my niece, Shaniya Church. Shaniya is only 15 years old, and she is truly one of the brightest lights in our family. She’s a cheerleader, a beautiful soul, and the kind of kid who brings energy, laughter, and love everywhere she goes. Cheer wasn’t just something she did, it was a huge part of who she is.

On the morning of January 5th, 2026, after Christmas break, Shaniya was excited to return to school. While walking to her bus stop, she was struck by a vehicle traveling around 30 mph. In one unimaginable moment, our family’s lives were forever changed.

Shaniya suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent surgery. She now has a rod and screws in her leg and is facing a long, painful road to recovery filled with physical therapy, medical appointments, and ongoing care. Watching my brother’s child go through this is something no uncle and no parent is ever prepared for.

Right now, my brother and Shaniya’s mother have both had to stop working so they can be by her side every step of the way. Their only focus is caring for their daughter, helping her heal physically and emotionally, and getting her through each day. Unfortunately, insurance will not cover many of the medical expenses, home recovery supplies, and basic needs that come with an injury this severe, and the financial strain is overwhelming.

As her uncle, it breaks my heart to see my brother and his family carrying so much pain, fear, and uncertainty while trying to stay strong for their daughter. That’s why I’m asking for help — to lift even a small part of this burden so they can focus on what truly matters: Shaniya’s healing and future.
