For those who don’t know her, Shani is a young mum of two, a four year old daughter and a one year old son. She is now facing a medical emergency that has completely turned her world upside down.

She recently underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction to protect her future after testing positive for genetic markers that put her at extremely high risk of developing breast cancer. Instead of healing, she developed severe complications, the most serious being necrosis. She had to urgently travel to Sydney for emergency surgery to stop it progressing to sepsis, which is life threatening and can lead to organ failure.

Since arriving in Sydney she has already undergone one surgery and still has more ahead, including urgent skin and muscle grafts. Doctors have advised she will likely be in hospital for at least a month.

Her husband Tim had to return to work because their mortgage alone is higher than his income. Without two incomes, the medical bills are piling up faster than they can manage. They have tried every avenue for financial support, including Centrelink and compassionate release of super, but have been denied.

Because Shani is from the Coffs Coast, she is alone in Sydney and separated from her babies, who are staying with their grandparents while Tim works to keep the household afloat.

This family is doing everything they can, but they are falling behind fast.
