Help Shanelly with Chemo Treatment

Hello, my name is Gricelidis Nunez, and I want to share the story of my Goddaughter, Shanelly Feliz, a 28-year-old diagnosed with Stage 2B Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

 

I met Shanelly when I first came to the States back in 1993; she was an infant, only a few months old, we lived together with our mothers in Massachusetts. She was always a good baby, did not cry, wasn't fussy with food at all; overall, an excellent baby to take care of, a well-behaved child. And like all babies, she grew up, and I became her Godmother. She went to college, graduated, worked various jobs in Massachusetts, and moved to Texas with her boyfriend in 2019. With this change of life also came a shift in her health that has prompted me to share her story with you.

 

Around the time she started to prepare for a new chapter of her life, Shanelly began not to feel well health-wise. She visited many doctors in Massachusetts, but unfortunately, like many of the well-documented stories of the BIPOC, those doctors did not listen attentively, leaving her underlying health issues unattended with no proper care. Oddly enough, her voice was heard in Texas, and on May 28th, 2020, she was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

 

Think about this for a moment; a human being is diagnosed with a type of cancer that specifically targets your immune system, at a moment when we find ourselves in a health crisis trying to overcome COVID-19. To have to face this health condition has always been challenging, but to face it now post-covid, with a lack of health benefits, is terrifying, and one could only be filled with anguished and feel as if a death sentence has been bestowed upon one. Losing health insurance coverage during a serious illness such as cancer is a personal disaster that can be hard for a cancer patient to overcome.

 

Shanelly's health seems to be progressing, but she's not out of the woodworks yet. With no insurance and only working a few days due to her health, the doctors’ visits, paying out of pocket for medication, and the many Pet and CT scans, the medical bills are quickly stacking up. Because her immune system is so low and amid an uptick in the pandemic, going out is a risk for her, and she cannot work more hours to keep up with the mounting expenses. At this point, Shanelly has done a few rounds of different types of chemo treatments; six months of ABVD, two months of ICE, one month of autologous stem cell transplant with much harsher chemo, and another month of radiation.

 

Cancer patients, unfortunately, are given a death sentence by the healthcare system and the insurance companies that will not cover cancer patients accordingly. If they survive and beat the disease, they are obligated to live their whole lives under stress due to the excessive, abusive and immoral debt this failing health system of us thrust upon them.

 

Please help me raise funds for my goddaughter Shanelly Feliz, who is 28 years old with Stage 2B Hodgkin's Lymphoma, in dire need of maintenance chemo for the following year.

 

 

Hola, mi nombre es Gricelidis Núñez, y quiero compartir la historia de mi ahijada, Shanelly Feliz, una joven de 28 años a la que se le diagnosticó un linfoma de Hodgkin en estado 2B.

 Conocí a Shanelly cuando llegué por primera vez a los Estados Unidos en 1993; era una bebé de pocos meses, vivíamos juntas con nuestras madres en Massachusetts. Siempre fue un buen bebé, no lloraba, no era nada exigente con la comida; en general, un bebé excelente para cuidar, una niña bien educada. Y como todos los bebés, creció, y yo me convertí en su madrina. Fue a la universidad, se graduó, tuvo varios trabajos en Massachusetts y se mudó a Texas con su novio en 2019. Con este cambio de vida también llegó un cambio en su salud que me ha llevado a compartir su historia con ustedes.

 Cuando empezó a prepararse para un nuevo capítulo de su vida, Shanelly empezó a no sentirse bien de salud. Visitó a muchos médicos en Massachusetts, pero desgraciadamente, como muchas de las historias bien documentadas de BIPOC, esos médicos no la escucharon con atención, dejando sus problemas de salud subyacentes sin atención adecuada. Curiosamente, su voz se escuchó en Texas, y el 28 de mayo de 2020 se le diagnosticó un linfoma de Hodgkin en fase 2. 

 Piensa en esto por un momento; a un ser humano se le diagnostica un tipo de cáncer que ataca específicamente a su sistema inmunológico, en un momento en el que nos encontramos; una crisis de salud tratando de superar el COVID-19. Tener que enfrentarse a esta condición de salud siempre ha sido un reto, pero enfrentarse a ella ahora después de la COVID, con la falta de prestaciones sanitarias, es aterrador, y uno sólo puede llenarse de angustia y sentirse como si le hubieran dictado una sentencia de muerte. Perder la cobertura del seguro médico durante una enfermedad grave como el cáncer es un desastre personal que puede ser difícil de superar para un paciente de cáncer.

 La salud de Shanelly parece estar progresando, pero aún no está fuera de peligro. Sin seguro y con pocos días de trabajo debido a su salud, las visitas al médico, el pago de los medicamentos de su bolsillo y las numerosas tomografías y escáneres, las facturas médicas se acumulan rápidamente. Como su sistema inmunologico está tan bajo y en medio de una recrudescencia de la pandemia, salir es un riesgo para ella, y no puede trabajar más horas para hacer frente a los crecientes gastos. En este momento, Shanelly ha realizado varias rondas de diferentes tipos de tratamientos de quimioterapia; seis meses de ABVD, dos meses de ICE, un mes de trasplante autólogo de células madre con una quimioterapia mucho más dura, y otro mes de radiación.

 Los pacientes de cáncer, por desgracia, reciben una sentencia de muerte por parte del sistema sanitario y de las compañías de seguros que no cubren a los pacientes de cáncer como corresponde. Si sobreviven y vencen  la enfermedad, están obligados a vivir toda su vida bajo estrés debido a la deuda excesiva, abusiva e inmoral que les impone este fallido sistema sanitario.

 Por favor, ayúdenme a recaudar fondos para mi ahijada Shanelly Feliz, que tiene 28 años y un linfoma de Hodgkin en estadio 2B, y que necesita urgentemente quimioterapia de mantenimiento para el próximo año.
