Help Shane Recover from a Life-Changing Brain Injury

Please take a moment to read Shane’s story — a real journey of resilience, hope, and miracles in the face of overwhelming challenges.

In the early hours of June 8th, after happily finishing his shift earlier than expected, Shane was riding home on his e-scooter. He was excited to arrive, finally sit down with a glass of wine and relax after a very busy shift. Tragically, less than 30 minutes after setting off —and just two minutes from home—he was found unconscious on the side of the road, with a severe open head injury despite having worn his helmet.

Shane was rushed to Hospital Marina Baixa, where a CT scan revealed extensive internal bleeding in his brain. With no neurosurgery unit on-site, he was transferred to Alicante General Hospital for emergency brain surgery.
There, surgeons performed a life-saving craniotomy but warned that Shane might not survive the next few days, urging his family to fly in from the UK.

Shane spent 12 days in an induced coma and 25 days in Critical Care, battling one life-threatening complication after another— aspiration pneumonia, COVID, seizures, blood infections, dangerously high potassium levels, and a persistent high fever.

Adding to all of this, a CT scan during those early days revealed devastating news: due to his injury, Shane had suffered from a massive Ischemic stroke damaging most of his brain’s left hemisphere— primarily responsible for language— and causing permanent loss of blood flow.
Doctors warned that he would likely remain in a vegetative state, unable to open his eyes or breathe on his own. They also mentioned the possible future decision of turning off his life support.

Refusing to lose hope, we encouraged him to keep on fighting and once sedation was lifted, Shane began to defy the odds.

Now, just six weeks after the accident and 18 days after being moved out of Critical Care, Shane has shown remarkable signs of recovery. He now breathes on his own through a tracheotomy, eats and drink without issue and shows clear emotional responses. Despite damage to the language center of his brain, Shane shows many early signs of comprehension—smiling when doctors speak to him, even shedding tears and expressing frustration.

His resilience is nothing short of incredible.

Shane’s healing journey is only just beginning. He still requires full-time companionship and will soon be awaiting a transfer to a specialised brain injury clinic, where he will receive intensive physical, cognitive, and speech therapy.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) rehabilitation is long and challenging but we’re hopeful for what his future holds.

We’re asking for donations to support Shane’s long-term recovery journey, without the added stress of financial strain—covering costs of therapy, rehabilitation equipment, home care, and daily living needs.

We know that money is tight for many, but if you’re able to contribute—even a small amount—it will make a real difference, helping Shane to access more treatment options and give him the chance to rebuild his life.
If you can’t donate right now, please consider sharing this page to help us reach more people and raise awareness of the life-altering risks associated with e-scooters—even when wearing a helmet.

Shane is deeply loved by his community, and your support means everything to him, his partner Sophie, and his family.

Thank you for your all your kindness and belief in his recovery. Let’s help get Shane the future he deserves.

P.S. We still don’t know how this all occurred however the scene of the accident was considered suspicious and viewed potentially as a hit and run. The case is still under police investigation.
