This is my nephew Shane, he’s seven years old and an absolute comedian. He was born prematurely, along with his twin sister, at only 29 weeks (11 weeks early).
Ever since he was a teeny wee baby Shane has been a constant source of joy for the entire family. Funny, wildly smart and loving and kind. As he has gotten older, Shane has become keenly interested in the universe, nature, religion and his favourite topic of intense conversation… JAPAN.
He has always struggled physically as a result of his traumatic birth but never let it hinder his zest for life and with the help of physical therapy and his special footwear he has been able to participate in physical play a lot more.
In the last few years, however, the family have seen a change in Shane. The endlessly energetic, curious and hilarious wee boy has retreated. Instead we see an anxious, sad and confused Shane. His sensory sensitivities have been heightened to such a degree that he doesn’t want to leave the house, his pyjamas or his mother’s side.
He is only seven years old.
Shane has struggled within the school system since day one and any efforts to get help and support have been met with door slam bureaucracy.
We, as a family, first raised concerns over four years ago. We now need help in getting a life changing diagnosis for this beautiful little boy.
He needs specialist schooling, he needs access to additional services. He has a right to an education that understands and caters to his needs and not the other way round.
Shane’s mum is a single parent who works for a local church and the cost of private ADHD/ Autism diagnosis is way off the scale out of her financial capabilities.
We are a proud, working class, socialist family and are saddened that we cannot turn to the NHS for help. Waiting times currently at seven years for just a diagnosis. Shane would be fourteen years old. All that time without adequate education or mental health support.
If anyone could spare a few quid to go towards the £4000+ diagnosis, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you from Shane and The Thomson Family. ♥️
