Hi, I am Shahanaz, an aspiring, first-generation clinical pharmacy student heading off to college in a few weeks. I am the first born out of six children in my family. Coming to America as a refugee 10 years ago at the age of 8, it had been a dream of mine to attend school, graduate from a good university, and make my parents proud.
I was not schooled for the early years of my life, so when I came to the US, I took the chance to learn as much as possible; making the best grades, and studying diligently while teaching my younger siblings about the importance of education. I had no one to turn to but myself. My parents also relied on me for support since we had no families and relatives for support.
Recently, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. With it being in stage 3, her life is on the line. From attending checkups to chemotherapy to keeping records of her medication and files, I too, soon became the primary caretaker. I had to work three days a week part-time while being a full-time student (and juggling extracurriculars) to support her expenses and bills. My dad works full-time; with his work hours reduced tremendously, we are left to survive and live paycheck to paycheck.
However, my hard work and prayers paid off and my dream of entering university is becoming a reality. I was accepted to a good school in Boston, where I would study pharmaceutical sciences and eventually get a doctorate in pharmacy. I also graduated high school with high honors, and seeing the smiles from my parents was enough to make me keep going.
I am soon going to college with my parent's permission, despite the ongoing situation and their losing a major support system. But now, I have little to no savings for my college funds. Even with the generous scholarships and financial aid given by the school, being behind on rent and other bills, I cannot afford to pay for my college education.
My dad, coming from an underprivileged background, and my mom, who only had a high school diploma, understood the importance of education for the next generation, especially for girls and daughters. I want to keep going and pursue my degree not only for myself and my future but also to see the pride in the smile of my parents and to become an inspiration for my siblings.
Your support will help me cover tuition, housing, and other essential expenses as I embark on this life-changing journey. Every contribution, big or small, will bring me closer to achieving my dreams and paving the way for future generations in my family.
Thank you for reading my story and for your generous support!
