Help Honor Forgotten Champions: Metter Girls’ Track State Titles

I’m Coach Bradley, and from 1990 to 2006, I had the honor of coaching the incredible Metter High School girls’ track team. Against all odds—training without a track, with worn-out uniforms and minimal equipment—our determined group of student-athletes made history, capturing back-to-back State Championships in 1999 and 2000, plus three straight Region Championships from 1998 to 2000.

Yet, their inspiring achievements went unrecognized. No school officials or athletic directors ever attended a single meet. Instead of congratulations, the athletic director simply said, “I ain’t buying no damn rings.” For 25 years, their victories have been overlooked, and even today, Metter High’s athletic website highlights other teams but leaves these champions missing from its pages.

It’s past time to right this wrong. With your support and the generosity of this amazing community, we’ve already reached HALF of our fundraising goal! This shows how much people believe in honoring these remarkable women and restoring their well-earned legacy.

These seven young women endured ridicule, trained on city streets, and outperformed powerhouse teams—often with bigger squads and better facilities. Their grit and teamwork were unmatched, and their impact extended beyond just the scoreboard:

Shonna Murphy: Featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” and the Atlanta Constitution, Shonna was STATE CHAMP in the 100m, 200m, and 400m relay (1999), and 200m (2000).

Veronica Jordan: STATE CHAMP in the 400m, 300m, and 400m relay (1999), and 300m hurdles (2000).

Kadedra Deloach & Lenora Murphy: Key members of the championship 400m relay team and vital contributors in three other events at state.

Lucretia Mincey & Shay Posley: Scored crucial points in three events at the 1999 state meet.

Shay Posley & Dorine Robinson: Both pivotal at the 2000 state meet, helping secure the team’s overall victory.

Most of these outstanding athletes were also on the 1998 Region Champion and State Runner-Up team, paving the way for what followed.

Every dollar donated goes directly toward finally giving these champions the rings they earned, and any extra will be shared among these team members.

We’re so close to restoring these young women’s rightful place in Metter sports history. Please help us honor their legacy—let’s cross the finish line together!

Thank you for believing in these remarkable women and for your incredible support! Coach Bradley
