Title: Help Me Settle a 12-year Tax Burden from Spouse’s Cancer Battle
Story:
I’m going to cut to the chase. I need your help so I'm writing this with humility and hope. I’m in the final stage of resolving a painful chapter that began over 16 years ago, when my spouse was diagnosed with breast cancer — a battle we fought for 10 years and ultimately lost.
During that time, I spent over $400,000 out-of-pocket on healthcare not covered by Medicare to extend his life and give him the best possible quality of care. I lost my job in 2012 after sharing the news of his recurrence — legal at the time in Georgia — and my income dropped dramatically as I juggled hospital visits, caregiving, while piecing together coaching / consulting work.
Between 2012 and 2020, paying taxes simply wasn’t possible. Survival came first like eating and a roof over our head. We were almost homeless twice.
For the last six years, I’ve worked tirelessly with attorneys to resolve this. Both the IRS and Georgia Dept of Revenue have finally agreed to settle a combined total of $223,000 in federal and state tax debts for $161,000 and to waive all penalities and interest.
This is my one shot to put this behind me and start a new life. I’ve already raised $116,000. I need $45,000 more — and I have until JUNE 28 now to get there before liens are placed on my assets and income. The IRS backed up the date from July 5 to June 28 today.
If you’re able to contribute, I’d be incredibly grateful. If you can’t, just sharing this helps more than you know.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. Contact me if you have any questions.
