Learn about how the Cyprus River Blenny went extinct here: https://freshwaterlifeproject.org/how-did-the-cyprus-freshwater-blenny-disappear/
The Cyprus River Blenny was last seen in 1909 and has been presumed extinct for over 100 years. Freshwater Life Project want to help bring this species back to Cyprus by introducing its very closest genetic relative back into the rivers in its former range. This is a very complicated process, but in order to do this, one of the first major steps we need to complete is the extraction and sequencing of the species DNA from the only known preserved specimens held at the Natural History Museum London. This will help us identify the closest genetically related living population of the species that will be used in the species reintroduction to Cyprus.
More information about Freshwater Life Project: Freshwater Life Project (Registered Charity No. 1172393) is run by a small team of unpaid independent researchers working to make tangible changes for the future of threatened and endangered freshwater species and their habitats worldwide. The charity's mission is to conserve, restore, and protect freshwater ecosystems through research, education, and practical action using an inclusive community-centered approach so that biodiversity and people alike can experience the benefits of thriving freshwater ecosystems for generations.
