The UConn Ski Team needs your help!
We are a student run club sport that competes against other schools varsity programs. All organization and administrative duties are carried out by the athletes themselves. UConn provides us with funding, but as anyone who has ski raced knows, skiing is not cheap. This leaves a margin of our operating expenses that the members of the team to pay for out of pocket. As the winter wears on, our funding gets used and we are left to pay more and more. This is why we need your help.
The team competes in the highly competitive MacConnell Division. Our regular season is made up of 10 races all over the Northeast, from Lake Placid to Northern New Hampshire. The Men’s and Women’s teams were able to win one race each and end up in 4th and 2nd respectively. Throughout the season we saw some of the best skiing in UConn history with 4 athletes earning all MacConnell Division distinction.
This past weekend we arrived at regionals in Sugarloaf Maine focused on competing for the win in each event. On Saturday, the women were able to continue their fast and consistent skiing and finished the day in second; their best result at regionals ever. The boys fed off the girl’s performance and were able to build a 2 second lead after the first run. With the sun now behind the trees and Narrow Gauge as steep as ever, the boys were able to throw themselves down the hill and hold on for the win, which was also their best result ever.
Both teams were able to back up their performances Sunday in the midst of heavy snow and high winds with the Women ending up in 4th and the Men in 3rd. Combined with Saturday’s results, this put both teams in 2nd overall for the weekend. Neither team has ever been 2nd in the region overall and this year both teams were able to do it!
Individually, the Women flooded the top 10 led by Captain Lauren Sullivan, Freshman Jackie Balch and Junior Alex Marshall. Marshall also ended up in the top 10 overall for the weekend. Men’s athletes also found themselves in the top 10, with Captain Brian Chambers and Sophomore Vlad Ilies in the top 10 in both events and the overall and Captain Joe Demuyt for the GS and overall.
Due to this weekend’s performance, both the Men’s and Women’s teams qualified for Nationals at Snow King Mountain in Jackson Wyoming, where we hope to compete for a spot on the podium and to uphold our position as the best club team in the nation. The school will cover some of it, but there are many expenses for this trip that we need your help to afford. Some of the things that these funds will be used for are flights, entry fees, rental vehicles and food.
We appreciate all the support that we have received already this year, especially our friends and family, without whom we could never dream of making it through the season. We look forward to your donations, of any size, that will let us do what we love most, ski.
