Australia’s Deaf Women’s Basketball Team is heading to Tokyo – for the first time in 15 years!

The Geckos are back and they’re ready to make history. This November, Australia’s Deaf Women’s Basketball Team will compete on the world stage at the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo, marking our long-awaited return after more than a decade.

But getting there is no easy feat.

For these incredible athletes, basketball is more than just a game - it’s a space of empowerment, sisterhood, and pride. It’s where deaf and hard of hearing women come together to build lifelong connections, grow as leaders, and represent a community that often goes unseen.

Now, they have a chance to shine on the global stage but they need your support.

The Geckos train monthly in Melbourne, flying in from across Australia to attend high-performance weekend camps. Each athlete is balancing Deaflympics preparation with work, study, and personal commitments - all while self-funding most of the journey.
