We have lost a great wife, mother, friend and teacher. For 30 years, Mareme Faye with the help of her husband, Baba Malik Sow, taught West African dance classes every Tuesday and Saturday at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. Mareme was a staple in the LA dance community who also hosted annual trips to Senegal where she helped many of us return to Africa for the first time. On Monday morning, Mareme made her transition to the ancestral realm and now we need to assist her in the last leg of her journey home.
This is a call to everyone - all cultural artists, dancers, drummers, musicians, choreographers, producers, master teachers and students of all levels.
We're asking for contributions and donations to return our Queen Mother Mareme to her final resting place in Dakar, Senegal where she will be received by her 105 year old mother, family and friends and laid to rest.
We're asking that you donate expeditiously so that she can arrive by the end of this week in order to honor her Muslim traditions.
For 30 years, Queen Mother Mareme Faye has been teaching dance throughout the United States from the East Coast to the West Coast at many West African dance camps such as Camp Fareta, Camp Mervielles, Kankouran, Lahydi, Collage des Cultures Africaines and others.
So, we're asking for dance camps, non profits and master teachers to share this GoFundMe with your students, your friends and everyone on your contact lists. We're asking master teachers to hold special dance and drum classes where donations can be collected and made in support of returning our Queen Mother to Dakar, Senegal. And lastly, we're asking each and every person to SHARE THIS LINK across all social media platforms.
We all loved Mareme and she loved us back. So let's do this last great thing for a woman who gave so much and rarely asked for anything. Let's do this as a unified community to show her and her family how much we appreciate the impact she's had in all of our lives.
Please direct questions to Mama Nzingha Camara [email redacted].
Peace, love and blessings.
