As you likely know, our Jamaican community is the backbone of Stowe. An important part of our vibrant town and economy, our Jamaican community members are restaurant managers, chefs, servers, and among many other things, the professional leaders of our destination resort town.
Sadly, our friends, co-workers and "family" from Jamaica have all been devastated by the recent hurricane. After being able to assess the situation to understand how best to provide support, our friend and partner, Warren Miller, owner of Warren's Kitchen , is spearheading an effort to send building supplies to his Jamaican community. Through conversations with families in the hardest hit parts of the island, we know people are eager to start re-building the homes, schools and churches they have lost. But they desperately need supplies. While food, water and sanitary items are being dispersed throughout Jamaica, there is no access to the supplies people need to rebuild and get roofs over their heads.
The Alchemist is working with Warren to purchase a 20' storage container that we will fill and ship to Jamaica. We are working hard together to sort out logistics, and will be purchasing everything from wood and nails, to hammers, roofing materials and doors. Many of the supplies, including chain saws, can be shared among community members. In an effort to be efficient and make sure we get everything on the wish list (and everything is in working condition), we are NOT taking donated items from the general public. We will be coordinating with local building supply companies to purchase items "at cost" or below when possible, and we will reach out to construction companies for unwanted materials. Still, this is going to be an expensive endeavor and one we need help with. The Alchemist is committed to investing $12k in this project, but if we are able to raise an additional $20K, we will be able to add more high value items from the "wish list", including generators and new mattresses.
100% of any money donated will go directly to purchasing building supplies for families in need. We have been told that the island is experiencing a lot of corruption with donated money, so this is a great way to make sure that all of your money goes directly to a community in desperate need.
From our dear friend Warren- "I am just appreciative of every little thing as it will go a long way by helping back our communities."
Thank you so much for considering.
