How many of us can say we have a happy place? A place where from the minute you walk in till you leave there is always a smile on your face? For our 16 year old daughter, Avigial, Camp Hasc is that place.
This year she will be going back to Camp Hasc for her 11th summer. Camp HASC is the award winning summer program of the Hebrew Academy for Special Children. Located in the scenic Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, Camp HASC provides over 300 individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a seven week sleep-away camp experience, just like many of their siblings and friends.
Camp HASC is unique in its synthesis of academic and recreational programming. At HASC we seek to maximize the development of each individual's potential by providing special education, speech, physical, occupational and music therapies as well as computer instruction, adaptive physical education and adaptive aquatics. Hand in hand with their academic program, the campers are able to participate in the full range of recreational activities including (but not limited to) sports, swimming, field trips, night activities, Torah learning, roller skating, carnivals, concerts and mainstream social programs with other camps.
As result, these special youngsters and adults often gain skills and achieve milestones beyond the scope of parental expectations while enjoying enjoyable activities in a stress free, social environment.
Whenever you think of Avigial you will always have a vision of her with a smile! In the past 2 years, Avigial has been through a lot. More than some adults will experience in a lifetime including 4 broken legs due to seizures, 3 brain surgeries and numerous hospital stays but no matter what, she was always smiling, booing the doctors and calling all the BOYZ!!
No matter where she was her HASC counselors were right by her side. As so many of you know Avigial is obsessed with Elsa and Anna from Frozen. This year she had to spend her 16th Birthdday in the hospital. Her counselors were not going to let a hospital stay stop her from having a great day! After a few phone calls and text they got Elsa and Anna from A Moment of Magic Foundation to come visit! Words can not even describe her excitiment! Watch the video and see for yourselves.
We turn to you to help us get Avigial back to her happy place in Camp Hasc where she is surrounded by smiles and laughter from her counselors and friends.
