Hello Supporters & Donors,

So what's my story & why am I asking for your help?

My name is Amanda Anderson, I am Deaf and I am 23 years old. I have always dreamed of attending art college. I am so motivated in my aim to go to university so I can meet my parents' expectations and to achieve my own personal educational goals. I am seeking your help to cover my university tuition fee as I am soon to be stepping into my dream goal to attend university at the Western Oregon University in the US in Fall 2021.

I am from the beautiful island of Jamaica, a small country with a big heart in the developing world. I love my country. I've never fundraised for myself before, as I have a hard time asking others for help but I am setting up this Gofundme page to try and help raise funds to help achieve my goal of raising enough funds to take me to WOU.

Long story:

As an international student of lower middle class working parents, travelling to the United States to study, I do not have quick and easy access to funds to cover the $45,000 USD yearly tuition other fees. I need funds to cover other expenses including air travel, ground transport, meals, and so on. I live in a nuclear family and I am the only deaf family member.  With an estimated combined net income of $160,000 -$180,000 JMD per month (including my project income which will end at the end of October 2020) which is equivalent to $1000-1200 USD. It is definitely not the most comfortable life but we make it work.

When I go to WOU to study, I will have to pay $45, 000USD each year on average. Of course, my hard-working parents are committed to supporting me as best they can, however, both of their salaries combined (est. $120,000 JMD net per month) is grossly inadequate to cover my school fees and other related fees. My dad operates a taxi and Mom is currently working with a non-profit organization as a Human Resource Officer.

Although I am trying to raise funds on my own and my parents are supporting all my fundraising efforts as well as are helping me with finding a suitable scholarship, as a Deaf daughter, I see the kind of pressures my parents and myself are facing, and as they get older and having supported me for 23 years, now I am a young adult I can better understand youth culture, and I believe that people my age should aim for financial independence, which for me means I shouldn’t be relying on my parents all the time to support me.

On top of everything else, I am aware that my being deaf compared to being hearing puts me at a disadvantage and it would be hard for me to find a part-time job, and even if I do, it will do little to lessen the amount of pressure to earn enough to cover my school fees and meet other obligations.

In addition to this, amid the crisis that is going on around the world today, with faith and continuous prayer to my Heavenly Father I am confident that I will continue on my academic path of success. I have high hopes to start my tertiary education at my DREAM UNI!- Western Oregon University in the USA where I will be pursuing a double major in Dance and Art & Design. My passion for the arts has drawn me to continue my studies in the Art & Design and Dance fields. In the future, I will be a Dancer, Choreographer, Graphic Designer, and Entrepreneur and will use my platform and the skills gained at Western Oregon University to create new businesses to help people in the Deaf Community to have a better standard of living in my country, Jamaica, by providing them with opportunities to operate deaf-owned businesses.

I am forever a strong believer that I will be going abroad to study. However, it pains my heart because there is a cloud of uncertainty when I think of tuition and other expenses. As my family's resources are already being stretched to re-pay debts, I place my faith and trust in God that persons will be kind enough to assist me in any way they can to realise my goals. His word in Luke 1:37 reminds me that  "With God All Things Are Possible. " and I am confident that with your help I will be able to attain my dreams.

According to Western Oregon University, Office of International Education & Development (OIED),  International Students are required to pay a total of at least US $45,000.

The funds are broken down below:
Tuition: $27,678
Room and Board: $10,389 (on-campus)
Books and Supplies: $1,200
Transportation and Personal Expense: $2,496
Mandatory International Health Insurance: $1,900
Other Fees: $1,337

I am looking forward to leaving the island in August 2021, however, I must show that I can finance myself for the Academic year 2021-2022 to the OIED from early February 2021.  I crave your assistance in doing so, I pray that you will give a generous donation and help me to make you all proud.

No matter how much I plan, work, and save, I just can't quite make it to the required total to pay for the Academic year 2021-2022 to the OIED. That's why I am asking for your help. If you have any extra funds in your budget, that you would be willing to part with, I would be eternally grateful. Please help me to obtain the funds I will need to finance my school fees and to cover my cost of living while I attend university and also Please share it too. Thank you from the deepest place of my heart and for taking the time out of your day to read all of this statement. I really appreciate it! God bless you.

From Amanda xoxo
