Please help this amazing student go to nursing school! Kimberly and I were matched through a volunteer organization and I am her college coach. Kimberly has impressed me with her motivation and hard work; she has completed everything early and accurately. She also cleans houses to help her parents with rent, was captain of her soccer team (pre-covid), and has volunteered at Cedars Sinai. Kimberly has been accepted to nursing school but there is a gap between what she received in financial aid and the total cost. Here is Kimberly in her own words:
"Hi everyone! My name is Kimberly Bachez and I am a 16-year-old senior in high school in Los Angeles. Since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a pediatric nurse. My nephew was born with a lot of physical problems and I have helped my sister care for him since he was a baby. I also volunteered at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in the nursing department. Living through financial struggles has motivated me to work hard to achieve my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. Covid and the shutdowns have been hard for our family as my mom lost her job, and my dad had his schedule at work reduced. Because my parents are undocumented, we don’t qualify for much help. We are struggling to pay for food and rent and I have started cleaning houses with my aunt to earn money for my family.
Being accepted to Mount St. Mary’s was amazing news! Although the acceptance made me happy, I am worried about paying for it. I received financial aid but it does not cover the full amount. I don’t want money to be the issue for not accomplishing my goals. This challenge has brought fear but I have tried my best so it won’t affect me academically. I have always viewed challenges as a way to make myself stronger and better and this is no different. I really hope that I can accomplish my dream of becoming a pediatric nurse. Thank you so much for reading this!"
The gap between the financial aid Kimberly received and the total cost of the program is about $8500 a year. She has to let the nursing schools know by May 1 if she will be attending. Thank you for any help you are able to give!
