Help Semaj Take Flight to Colombia
Donation protected
Hi family and friends, my name is Semaj Lee, and I’m asking for your help. I am a 7th grade student at Independence Charter School located at 16th & Lombard in Philadelphia, PA where I have been enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program since Kindergarten. ICS is a diverse school with a global focus designed to develop independent, thoughtful global citizens through second language learning, and integration of arts, ideas, and histories from around the world.
In October, I applied to participate in Take Flight, an educational program that provides students from my school the opportunity to travel to one of three Spanish speaking countries: Colombia, Guatemala, and Ecuador. In December, I learned that I will be travelling to the country of Colombia with 13 of my classmates and 3 teachers to take part in a full week of service learning. While in Colombia, I will attend the local school, taking part in learning activities with native students; participate in service projects within the local community; and travel to different sites to learn more about the culture and history of Colombia.
In the past, I have traveled to Mexico with my parents to both La Playa Del Carmen and Los Cabo San Lucas. While in La Playa Del Carmen, we visited an indigenous community inhabited by people who are less fortunate. I had the opportunity to distribute food from purchased care packages and play with some of the kids who lived in the village. This was an experience that I will never forget as it exposed me to how some people live outside of my immediate community and inspired me to help others. ICS has played a big roIe in my global understanding and tolerance toward people that are different from me. I plan to expand upon this by continuing in my language development and seeking out additional travel learning opportunities.
Upon returning from my trip to Colombia in April, I plan to share my experiences with family and friends through journal entries and photographs. I’m also working with my cousin to create a blog so that I can write about my daily activities for anyone interested to follow while I’m away. In order to make this trip financially possible, I’m asking for your support. Anything that you can give is much appreciated. There’s no donation too small. I also understand if you're unable to and I thank you for your consideration and for visiting my page!!
Love Maj!
