Hi! My name is Selma Asantewa Apara, and I hate my major. My entire life, I have been a high achiever with my studies, but have also been extremely creative. From performing in musicals, to dancing, and even doing creative photoshoots, I have always been a multi-talented creative. When I got to college, though, I decided to pursue a degree in Computer Science, due to my low-income background. I grew up extremely poor, experiencing homelessness for the first eight years of my life. College for me meant an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty, and make something of myself. But I never truly wanted to pursue Computer Science. As I continued my studies, I realized more and more how much I honestly hated it. My mental health was being affected by me staying in pursuit of something that does not truly make me happy, in the slightest. I have felt stuck, because all of my external scholarships are for Computer Science, and if I change my major, I lose my money to attend Howard University. I am tired of suffering within a major that I truly dislike. I want to act, to dance, to sing, and create beautiful art that feeds my soul. I plan to change my major to acting, and follow my dreams. I also want to give back to my community, by volunteering creative lessons to those in need—those who grew up like me. I know that I am destined for greatness, I just need a little support along the way.
