Sekai Burgess has always been a kind, hardworking, and passionate young man. Raised in Japan by his incredible single mother alongside his two older sisters, Sekai developed a deep love for basketball at an early age. He dedicated himself to the sport, playing on top-level select teams with international members. But in Japan, opportunities to play at the highest level are limited.

That’s when his coach gave him life-changing advice: If he wanted to take his game to the next level, he needed to study and play in the United States.

He has thrived here—growing as a player, a student, and a young man, thanks to the unwavering support of his host families, teammates, coaches, and classmates.

But dreams this big come with big challenges.

Sekai’s mother did everything she could to support this opportunity, but the cost of studying and playing in the U.S. is far beyond what she anticipated. Coming from a culture where fundraising for school and sports expenses is uncommon, Sekai’s family was unprepared for the financial demands of American high school life—uniforms, travel costs, training fees, and just the everyday expenses of being a teenager. The exchange rate makes it even tougher, and makes life here significantly more expensive for his family back home.
