Children of Light:
In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Help 16 Orphans & Their Guardian Charles Find Healing, Shelter & Dignity.
Meet Charles:
Charles Mutuma is the guardian of 16 orphaned children in Kenya, caring for them despite battling cancer and facing persecution for his faith. Charles's cancer has relapsed and need our help to support his family while he seeks the medical attention he needs.
Since his conversion to Islam, he has suffered severe hardships—from violent beatings and hospitalizations to physical attacks while attending the burial of one of his children.
Charles is more than a guardian—he is a symbol of unshakable faith, courage, and selfless love. Despite facing beatings, threats, hospitalizations, and isolation for his beliefs, he has never once abandoned the 16 children who call him father. Even as cancer grips his body, Charles continues to teach, protect, and uplift the children with gentle guidance and unrelenting devotion.
When he took in the most vulnerable of them all, Maxwell—a child living with a severe disability—his wife, overwhelmed by the growing burden, left him. She could not bear the responsibility of caring for so many children, especially one in need of constant attention. But Charles did not waver. He embraced the challenge alone, refusing to turn away a child in need.
He cooks when he can stand, he teaches when his voice is weak, and he offers spiritual strength even when his own health is failing. His every breath is a sacrifice for them. Charles’s life is a living testimony to the power of love grounded in divine purpose. His strength is the light these children follow—and it is this light that this campaign seeks to preserve and honor.
Meet the Children:
Sixteen children, aged 3 to 17 (with one permanently disabled), currently reside with Charles in a single, overcrowded room behind a small restaurant they operate.
The Situation:
Charles requires 4 months of medication at Ksh 80,000/month (roughly $600 USD/month).
The children live in perilous flood-prone conditions. The children have repeatedly been displaced, starved, and beaten by local extremists.
Although we have been personally supporting the family and even initiated a restaurant business that helps them scrape by, the mounting medical bills and abysmal living conditions demand urgent intervention.
Quote: “We’re out of food again. They’re waiting for me to send something.” – Charles (during treatment)
Our Vision: The Children of Light Center
Working with dedicated professionals, including scientists, engineers, and educators, our goal is to build a sustainable, long-term home for these orphans—one rooted in dignity, safety, and self-sufficiency.
The Target Property: Estimated Value: $50,000 USD
Key Features:
- 10 rooms for safe housing and communal activities.
- A shopfront to generate ongoing income for the household.
- Additional land earmarked for future expansion and sustainability initiatives.
Important Note on Property Acquisition:
If the identified property becomes unavailable, we will secure the funds and work to purchase another property that fulfills our vision—even if this requires an additional fundraising effort.
Stewardship & Ownership:
Once acquired, the property will be assigned to Charles with contingent ownership—meaning he will hold full responsibility and residence rights on the condition that the property is never sold, ensuring it remains a permanent sanctuary for the children. This agreement is designed to safeguard the future of the orphans and preserve the home as a sacred trust. As our capacity grows, we plan to expand this model into a larger network of homes and educational centers.
- If funded, this will enable a secure, permanent home that restores dignity and long-term stability.
- The establishment of a faith-based orphanage and school, free from persecution.
- The safe relocation of the children, including transport of essential equipment and materials from their current living space.
