When I was laid off from last job as an administrative assistant to the ED at a local nonprofit in the Bay Area in late August, 2024, I decided to move to Davis where the cost of living was lower and I could be closer to my sister and my church community. I stayed there for about a year, applying for jobs every single day and going to interviews, but despite my efforts and prayers, nothing worked out. To support myself and my two dogs, I began offering dog-sitting services, which helped for a while but was never enough to cover all of our needs.
Toward the end of August, I was blessed with an opportunity. I interviewed for an Administrative Assistant position at a local SJ nonprofit and, to my relief and joy, was offered the job the very next day. I packed up the few belongings I have, brought my two girls (my dogs), and moved back to San Jose to start this new chapter.
I had begun a lease application, but unexpected hidden fees forced me to withdraw. Instead, I booked an Airbnb for 15 days while completing onboarding and medical requirements for my new job. At the same time, I reached out to organizations that provide rental assistance. Unfortunately, the process can take a month or more for review and approval, and I am still waiting for their response.
In the meantime, I’ve posted everywhere I can offering dog-sitting, food services, and small jobs to earn income, but I haven’t been called or needed yet. I also contacted two Catholic churches that provide social services, including rental assistance, but their voicemail boxes were full and my emails remain unanswered.
I am doing everything I can to provide for myself and my girls. The severance I received when I was laid off, along with small jobs here and there, was enough to keep us afloat for a year. Now, with this new job in hand, I finally have a stable path forward. All I need is some support to get through this transition period until my first paychecks and rental assistance can come through.
I share this with deep humility. I’ve worked hard, prayed hard, and done all I can, but I cannot do this part alone. Any support to help me and my girls secure safe housing during this time would mean the world to us!
