On December 14th during a construction job for a friend, the top third of my pinky and ring fingers were amputated by a malfunctioning auger. After a traumatic 10 hour wait between two completely overrun emergency rooms (one of which I literally had to escape from) I was given the news that the fingers could not be reattached. As an avid musician from the age of 11, who uses his hands in literally every aspect of his professional and creative life, this was devastating news to say the least.
After 16 days of rehabilitation rivaling any physical and emotional pain I’ve ever experienced; it was confirmed by the third doctor to treat the hand that I’ve also sustained a torn ligament in my thumb that with require complex surgery to repair it. This to be followed by yet another 12-24 weeks of rehab and physical therapy. Looking back it could’ve been catastrophic as the auger could have easily taken my arm or worse, my life.
Though I am grateful to have only sustained these hand injuries, the once bright prospects of the professional and creative shift earlier in the year now seem like distant memories. I will never play instruments the way I use to and will likely have to cease the construction projects that were my main source of income.
I frankly never dreamed I’d need to set up a GoFundMe account, but between the mounting medical bills, mortgage payments and basic cost of living I’ve run out of options while I’m rehabbing from two surgeries. Any support would be greatly appreciated
UPDATE: January 31st, 2023
After two surgeries and a month of rehab on the two fingers, it has been determined by my doctor that my ring finger has sustained nerve damage. This would explain the intense pain I’ve experienced going back to the December 14th surgery to repair the partially amputated fingers. They finally prescribed Gabapentin for the nerve pain, which could take up to a mouth to offer any pain relief. After a day of being on it I can tell you the side effects might be worse than the nerve pain (nausea, dizziness, headaches, difficulty breathing). If the Gabapentin doesn’t relieve the pain the only other option would be a third surgery where they would amputate an additional centimeter off the ring finger and try to repair the damaged nerve ending. Hopefully the Gabapentin works.
