Hi, I’m Shannon and I’d like to introduce you to my partner, Sean. Earlier this year, Sean was diagnosed with seminoma (cancer) and was urgently scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding organs. Prior to the diagnosis, he had put off seeing a doctor after noticing symptoms for more than 6 months due to a lack of insurance coverage. With two college degrees and a full-time job that pays just above minimum wage, he falls approximately $1000 over the threshold to qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford marketplace options. We researched county and statewide resources for a low cost exam, but had come up short for months before learning that Doctor’s Care engaged volunteer doctors that could help. Fast forward through the exam, referral, oncologist’s diagnosis including diagnostic scans, surgery, and follow up appointments and imaging, Sean has incurred bills greater than $15,000 in the past 3 months alone, all at the self-pay cost and including all available assistance & grants. The oncologist also recommends 3 CT scans per year, costing around $5000 each, to ensure that the cancer has not spread to his lymph nodes or other areas.
We believe we have exhausted all national, state, county, and private funding options available to us, but are open to your suggestions and appreciate your help.
