Help Scott Transition to At-Home Dialysis

Hi all- My name is Sophie and I am setting up this page for my Uncle Scott who could really use our help right now.

Last July, he found out he was in stage 2 kidney disease. After a visit to the doctor for a routine check-up, the call came that things had progressed to stage 4 kidney disease the next morning. A quick scramble to find a new nephrologist, and when they saw the labs, they wanted him in right away.

The new doctor tried to keep him out of dialysis even though the diagnosis was in full swing in stage 4. That very weekend, he got RSV and it sent him to the hospital with his creatinine at 10.1! The RSV made it impossible to recover enough to stay off dialysis and he has been on it ever since.

As we scratched our heads and thought about it, he remembered that he had gotten a really bad spider bite on his left ankle. So he looked up spider bites and kidney problems and sure enough, if you’re already compromised and get bit, it can send you over the edge. They called it acute kidney injury because it was such a sudden drop from stage 2 to stage 4.

He has been on dialysis since late March of this year. And since he's a big guy, it takes 4.5 hours instead of the regular three or four hours. But after the last 6 months of treatment, he has lost 40 pounds and his blood pressure is normal for the first time in 20 years - which is great!

So now he is going to try at-home dialysis using a peritoneal catheter. But before then, he will have to spend a week in training, resulting in yet more loss of income. Somewhere along the line, his car went out so he has been trying to use Uber to and from both work and treatment. Scott is still working full-time and continuing to grow his business/private practice that he started before all of this. He is the primary breadwinner for his partner Traci, who has had 4 surgeries of her own in the past four years, as well as two young children and himself.

With the medical bills stacking up, no reliable mode of transportation, and a long road of treatment ahead - my uncle and his family need our support to help them through this difficult time. Please donate what you can and share/spread the word if you can't. We are all rooting for you, Uncle
