Scott Fraize: It's a Miracle He Is Alive!
As many of you know, on August 12, 2024, I received a call, my 32-year-old son Scott fell 20ft off a roof while working construction in Idaho. All they said, "He was alive and on his way to the hospital." I tried not to panic during the next 2 hours, waiting for an update. The ER trauma nurse called and told me Scott was stable but had multiple fractures, contusions, a punctured lung, and they were still running tests. At that point, I left work, got the next flight out and went straight to the hospital. The list of Scott's injuries is extensive, but we are so grateful he is alive after a fall he should not have survived! I spent 2 weeks in the hospital with Scott, as he was completely helpless. He could not do anything! He had surgery on both hands and clavicle and was finally moved to a rehabilitation center that was so inept, we decided he would get much better care at home in his own apartment. It has been 5 weeks since the accident, and I have been his 24/7 caregiver.
Scott is looking at a very long road to recovery due to his injuries. He is in a C-collar, with both hands out of commission and non-weight bearing. He has pins in his right wrist that should come out, and a plate and screws in his left wrist that may or may not come out in 4-6 months with therapy to follow. The plate and screws in his clavicle will stay in because it broke into four pieces. Unfortunately, Scott's left wrist was crushed when he fell, and he is left-handed, so we will have to wait and see how he heals.
I have wrestled with posting this or not, but the financial burden this is causing Scott is more than he can handle.
Scott will not be able to return to work for several months and still needs to pay his bills. We have been dealing with Idaho Workers Comp, which has been a nightmare. Can't imagine how anyone survives without an advocate! They will only approve 2 hours of caregiving a day, which is ridiculous because Scott cannot do anything by himself! That means I will not be going back home or work anytime soon and will be staying in Idaho, caring for Scott, until he recovers and can take care of himself.
I am trying to provide a positive atmosphere where Scott can be productive while he recovers and help him be as independent as possible. I am setting up his bedroom and family room so that he can eventually use a wireless keyboard, mouse, laptop, or tablet to keep from going stir crazy. I am working on getting things automated as much as possible. He loves working on his computer and learning new things, so hopefully, we can get what he needs to make that happen.
If you are able to contribute to help Scott's recovery, he will be very appreciative. I will post progress updates about his recovery.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story,
