Help Schools Have Access To Drinkable Water
Donation protected
Rain2Water is based at Los Gatos High School. Our team consists of Jeanette Grasty, Rosalie Brockmann, Tino Nanez, Max Houghton, and Linda BZ.
We are working with the Gravity Water Organization and are raising money to help fund water filtration systems for a rural school in Bát Xát, Lào Cai, Vietnam. These systems harvest and filter rainwater to make it easily accessible to the students and staff on campus.
We will be holding this fundraiser until May 1, 2022 and 100% of the proceeds will be going to fund the water filtration systems for Pa Cheo Secondary School.
Extra Information:
Less than 1% of the earth's water is accessible for drinking. Over 2 billion people around the world rely on a contaminated water source, every day, including Pa Cheo Secondary School. Lao Cai Province, where Bat Xat is located, is a mountainous region with a cold, dry climate from October to March and an intense monsoon season from April to September. The heavy monsoon seasons make Pa Cheo Secondary School perfect for the Rain Water Filtration system we want to provide.
Lao Cai is one of the two poorest provinces in Vietnam, with nearly 70% of people living below the poverty line. The community of Bát Xát relies heavily on subsistence farming and forestry, which has led to deforestation of wide areas in the region.
Currently, 314 students are attending Pa Cheo Secondary School, ages 11 to 14. Due to the difficulty of traveling through the mountainous, rural surroundings, 214 students who attend live on-site most of the year. Though there is a lot of water around Bat Xát village, moving the water from the "source" to the "sink" is a great challenge. The community often has to fetch water for use when the 1" black pipes that run along the mountainside get clogged or the stream is low. The water they do get is contaminated and is incredibly unsafe to use during the rainy season when there is a lot of runoff from the hillsides. Pa Cheo Secondary School currently relies on boiling the students' water for drinking. They only use spring water for both drinking and cooking. The school can't provide enough clean drinking water, so some students have to bring water from home or drink directly from the tap, which is unsafe for human consumption. Alternatively, they can purchase bottled water for 20,000 Vietnamese Dong (VND) per bottle.
