Debre Kewakbit Zequala Abune Gebre Menfes Kidus Monastery is one of the most sacred and historic monasteries in Ethiopia, dating back to the 12th century. For generations, this monastery has been a place of prayer, spiritual learning, and pilgrimage. Today, it is facing one of the most difficult times in its history.

Over the past few years, the monastery has endured devastating hardship. In February 2024, four monks were tragically killed, and in June 2025, a senior monk, Father Haile Michael, was also killed. The monastery has been looted, attacked, and partially burned. Because of these events, the monastery has lost its main source of income, the number of visitors has significantly declined, and the monks are now struggling to meet even basic daily needs like food. This is not just a financial problem—it is a matter of survival and dignity.

To overcome this crisis, the monastery has launched a long-term solution: building an income-generating facility in Addis Ababa, near Tekle Haymanot Church in the Merkato area. This project will provide a permanent and stable source of income, help the monks become self-sufficient, reduce reliance on donations and emergency aid, and ensure the monastery’s survival for future generations.
