I am an octogenarian Guyanese activist still aspiring – after decades – to save a precious piece of the Amazon from environmental destruction. I believe that my position as caretaker and guardian of Yukuriba Heights – an idyllic 357-acre slice of what’s left of pristine Amazonia – will not be secure until our deferred dream of a sustainable artists’ commune is fully realized.
We need your donation to help re-build our Yukuriba access road as a first step to returning to where we were crudely interrupted (see fuller background story here and here). Re-building the road will require materials, labor support, and transportation, among other costs – your donations will go directly to support these expenses.
Yukuriba Heights sits on a hill above the rapids of Yukuriba Falls in the Essequibo River in Guyana…bordered by Brazil and Venezuela. In my current straitened circumstances, without the resources to sustain Yukuriba, it has taken a determined effort of will to resist the hounding…increasing advances of agents representing multinational interests wanting to exploit our land for mineral wealth. The fact that I have witnessed the Earth’s hurt – the devastation that dredges and other heavy equipment leave behind, has made it less difficult...
Guyanese, like so many in the Global South are being dispossessed of our patrimony by these forces of extractive capital destroying the Earth. We are organizing against these foreign intrusions, a battle that requires relentless effort and persistence as well as vital resources. Your donation will go directly to help us occupy Yukuriba Heights in order to withstand further destruction of our tiny corner of Amazonia. We need funding as well as international support to help sustain our fight.
