Tux, my 5-year-old Boston terrier, has been my baby boy since the very beginning. He’s truly our family’s best friend, and my life revolves around him. On December 24th, while playing with his younger friend Sapphire, a freak accident happened. Suddenly, Tux began weeping and crying in a way I had never heard before. The pain in his cries was heartbreaking, and I knew something was terribly wrong. When I looked at him, his left eye was swollen to the size of a ping pong ball, with green discharge coming from it. Even though I didn’t have the funds, I rushed him to the emergency vet. They told me he had a perforated ulcer in his left eye and needed to see a specialist two hours away, but the specialist wouldn’t be available until Friday. The emergency vet prescribed pain medication, antibiotics, eye drops, and an e-cone to keep him comfortable until then. That visit alone was a big expense, and I was told payment plans weren’t an option.

Watching Tux’s eye get worse over the next few days was devastating. When we finally saw the eye specialist, we learned that the ulcer had caused an iris prolapse, and now Tux needs urgent surgical repairs. The type of surgery depends on how he responds to medication over the next week, but the procedure could require grafts, and if the graft is rejected, another attempt may be needed. The other option is removal of his eye, which we’re hoping to avoid at all costs.
