Help Save the Wildlife in Mittagong

We are raising money to save a vital wildlife habitat in Mittagong where several rescued animals were released.  Frensham School is proposing to build Bush Cabins on top of the wombat burrows and clear 4.2 hectares in this Endangered Ecological Community.  249 trees will be cut down, including 16 Koala feed trees.

To meet the RFS requirement for an Asset Protection Zone, the required clearing for the cabins will result in widespread destruction and death to many of the rescued wildlife that have been released into this area as well as the loss of hundred of trees.

Frensham School originally gave permission to wildlife rescuers to rehabilitate wombats at the Lower Holt.

6 were rehabilitated orphans and there are 10 to 14 wombats living in the Lower Holt. It takes up to 3 years to rehabilitate an orphaned wombat. Wombats breed only 1 offspring per two years. 80% of the Burrows in the Lower Holt are ancestral, being part of the ancient pathway.

If wombat burrows are destroyed from development, many wombats get buried alive and in this case the survivors will become stressed and vulnerable to disease or dispersed into the suburbs looking for a place to live, being unsafe for the wombat and vehicle traffic.

Wombats are tribal. It is dangerous to remove them from their wisdom and expect them to go elsewhere for human convenience.

The money raised will help us pay for advertising, signs and flyers to inform our community about this proposed development.
