Help Save the Voice That Has Carried the Bahamas to the World
My name is Jody Knowles, and today I come before you not just as a daughter, but as someone asking for help for one of The Bahamas' greatest cultural treasures my mother, Dr. JoAnn Deveaux Callender.

For more than six decades, my mother has devoted her life to music, education, faith, and the promotion of Bahamian culture. She has spent her life pouring into others, often placing service above herself. Today, she is facing one of the greatest challenges she has ever encountered, and our family needs your help.

Today, she needs us.

Dr. Callender has been diagnosed with a pituitary macroadenoma, a brain tumor pressing against her optic nerves. The tumor has already caused significant vision loss, and her medical team has advised that surgery, followed by radiation treatment, is urgently needed to preserve her eyesight and protect her future.

Dr. JoAnn Deveaux Callender is recognized as one of The Bahamas' leading operatic sopranos and has been honored as a Bahamian Icon for her extraordinary contribution to music and the arts. Throughout her distinguished career, she has proudly represented The Bahamas on some of the world's most prestigious stages.

She has had the honour of performing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, representing our nation with grace and excellence. Her voice has carried the spirit of The Bahamas across London, throughout the Caribbean, North America, South America, Spain, Dubai, and beyond, serving as a cultural ambassador wherever she has performed.

One of her greatest passions has been bringing Bahamian music to the world. Through concerts featuring the works of Bahamian composers and her creative interpretation of our nation's musical heritage, she has introduced international audiences to the richness and beauty of Bahamian culture.

At home, her influence has reached countless lives. She has sung with and led numerous musical organizations, from Seventh-day Adventist choirs to the renowned Chamber Singers, while also performing opera, jazz, sacred music, and cultural repertoire at national celebrations, churches, concerts, and civic events.

As an educator, she has inspired generations of musicians through her work as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of The Bahamas. After receiving her honorary Doctorate, she continued mentoring young artists, encouraging excellence while preserving and celebrating Bahamian music and culture.

If you know my mother, you know she has always been the one encouraging and lifting others to be the best version of themselves.

This is not the first battle she has faced.
Several years ago, she courageously fought breast cancer and, through God's grace, expert medical care, and the prayers of so many, she won that battle. Today, she is preparing to fight once again with the same faith, courage, and determination.

The cost of surgery, radiation treatment, medications, travel, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care is significant. This GoFundMe represents the first of several fundraising efforts our family is organizing to help provide the care she urgently needs.

If Dr. JoAnn Callender has ever taught you...
If she has ever inspired you through her music...
If she has ever performed at your church, at your concert, your wedding, a national celebration, or a cultural event...
If she has ever encouraged your child, mentored a young musician, or made you proud to be Bahamian...

We humbly ask you to stand with her now.
Every donation, regardless of the amount, brings us closer to giving her the treatment she needs. If you are unable to give financially, please consider sharing this campaign with your family, friends, churches, organizations, and communities. Your prayers and support are just as meaningful.

A woman who has spent her entire life lifting the hearts of others now needs the love and strength of the people whose lives she has touched.

On behalf of our entire family, thank you for standing with us during this difficult journey. We believe that, together, we can help her overcome this battle just as she has overcome so many others with faith, hope, and the support of a caring community.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Jody Knowles
Daughter of Dr. JoAnn Deveaux Callender
