Some of Southern Ontario’s largest Eastern Hemlocks are at risk of disappearing.

An invasive pest, Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), is spreading across the region and killing Eastern Hemlocks, including some of Canada’s largest recorded trees. Once these magnificent trees are gone, the cool, forested habitats they create and the wildlife that depend on them are also at risk.

We can help protect them, but time is running out. We have identified priority trees on Long Point Basin Land Trust (LPBLT) properties that can be treated, and we need your support to act now.

By donating, you are not simply helping save individual trees, you are helping protect an entire ecosystem.

Eastern Hemlocks are a foundation species in the forests of the Long Point Basin. They provide habitat for wildlife, help protect streams, and create the cool, shaded conditions that support a remarkable diversity of life. LPBLT properties contain some exceptionally large Hemlocks, including trees among the largest recorded in Canada. HWA puts these irreplaceable trees at risk.

Your support will help fund the equipment, training and treatments needed to protect these trees and establish the capacity to treat many more in the future.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

Our $8,000 fundraising goal will help us establish the capacity to treat priority Hemlocks now, and extend that work to additional trees as HWA is identified across our properties.

Our initial treatment and equipment costs include*:

• $1,500 - Specialized application equipment

• $2,000 - Certified professional labour

• $500 - Site preparation, fees and contingency

• $500 - Safety and monitoring supplies

• $200 - Initial treatment product

*Because the initial investment in equipment and training can be used for in the future, reaching our $8,000 goal will allow us to make that investment go much further, supporting the treatment of additional trees on multiple properties.

Every additional dollar helps us protect more Hemlocks and the habitat they support.
