The African penguin is disappearing.
Once numbering in the millions, fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remain in the wild today. Along the coast of South Africa, especially in the Western Cape, these iconic birds face mounting threats from food shortages, climate change, pollution, entanglement, disease, storms, and exhaustion during long-distance movements.
Every week, weakened, injured, dehydrated, or stranded penguins are found along the coastline. Without rapid intervention, many will die.
We are launching this fundraiser to support emergency response and veterinary care for African penguins rescued along the South African coast.
All funds raised will be distributed directly to:
* Brenton on Sea Wildlife Rescue
* Brenton on Lake Wildlife Rescue
*Research on marine wildlife
The goal is simple: ensure that a rescue team is always available when stranded wildlife is reported.
## What the funds will cover
Your donation will help pay for:
* Emergency rescue response for stranded penguins and other marine wildlife
* Fuel costs for rescue transport and veterinary transfers
* Veterinary consultations and stabilization
* Intensive care and specialist treatment
* Medical supplies and rehabilitation support
* Ongoing emergency standby capacity for rescue teams
The veterinary support includes:
* General stabilization and emergency treatment at Knysna Veterinary Clinic
* Specialist veterinary care through Robberg Veterinary Services
## Why this matters
African penguins are now classified as Critically Endangered.
Without urgent conservation action, they could disappear from the wild within our lifetime.
Rapid rescue and treatment make a real difference. Many stranded penguins can recover fully if they receive veterinary care quickly enough. Every response matters. Every transport matters. Every rescued penguin matters.
By supporting this campaign, you are directly helping frontline rescuers and veterinarians save one of Africa’s most threatened seabirds.
## How you can help
* Donate any amount
* Share this fundraiser widely
* Help raise awareness about the African penguin crisis
Together, we can give these birds a fighting chance.
Thank you for supporting wildlife rescue and conservation in South Africa.
