Help Save The Chabot Theater

Help Support/Save The Chabot!

In July 2019, The Chabot Theater was purchased by Smalltown Society, in partnership with First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, with the hope and purpose of preserving this historic gem in Castro Valley and re-establish it as a community hub for everyone (Telling Lives, One Story at a Time, A. Castro).

“If we can show the community that we care by preserving a building that is a part of their story and then make it a part of the future generations stories – I think that’s worth the risk in the investment of trying to make it not just a cultural hub but a place for people in 30 years can say – this building means the world to me because: I met so-and-so here, or because I performed here for the first time, or this is the place where I saw a film that changed my life or whatever. I think those places are fading and we need to preserve them and make more of them.” (Paul Keim - Smalltown Society Founder)

Unfortunately, The Chabot Theater has been closed since March 16, 2020 due to COVID-19. While we remain closed, The Chabot Theater continues to remain in business, largely due to the continued support and love of patrons, friends and community members. Much of the support has come from our Castro Valley Street Eats events. As of October 15, 2020 we will have completed our seventh month of closure. While many movie theaters anticipate an eventual reopening (at limited capacity) in the near future the remaining time of waiting to reopen will force many small businesses to permanently close, including The Chabot Theater. This is largely due to narrow operating margins of movie theaters and the challenge of reopening at a 25% limited capacity restriction, making it extremely difficult to be profitable.

As a result we are asking our patrons, friends and community to join us in helping keep this historic gem open. With your support we will be able to remain open during these challenging times. One of the greatest challenges we endure, as a result of COVID-19 are finding safe spaces for the community to gather. In an effort to continue remaining a place for the community to safely gather in the future, please consider sharing with friends and family.

We thank you for the warm reception and response by the community to save the theater! - The Chabot Theater
