The Berlin General Store has been a cornerstone of the community for 223 years, serving generations of families in the heart of Berlin. As someone who grew up in this town, I have always cherished the memories and history tied to the store. Five years ago, after retiring from a long career with a major hotel chain, I took on the ownership and management of the store to ensure its legacy would continue for future generations.
Despite my experience in hotel and food service management, running a small retail business has been a new and challenging journey. Over the past five years, I have worked tirelessly—seven days a week, fourteen hours a day, with only a few holidays off. I invested my retirement savings to purchase, maintain, and restore the store, but the economic conditions and the demands of keeping the business afloat have proven difficult. I have learned a great deal, but my ability to keep the store running on my own has reached its limit.
Now, the Berlin General Store faces the possibility of bankruptcy or being sold to another owner. I can no longer support the business out of my own savings, and I am turning to the community for help. The funds raised will be used to pay off back-taxes, overdue utility expenses, operational costs, and make necessary repairs to some of the old equipment inherited with the store. Your support will help keep this beloved institution open and preserve its legacy for future generations. Please consider helping us save the Berlin General Store and keep this important part of our community alive.
