Dear friends of the Albatross Pub,
For fifty-six years and counting, the Albatross Pub has been a quintessential space for nightlife in the Berkeley community. From its beginnings as a small beer & wine bar frequented by leaders of the Free Speech Movement, poets, and musicians alike, to its turn-of-the-century revamp where students, workers, and philosophers of all sizes could order a whiskey to accompany their beer, not much has changed about this place and we take pride in keeping it that way. Whether it’s the dart lanes, the board games, trips to the popcorn machine, the trivia and music nights, the conversations big & small that take place at our bowling alley bar, or the secret plans concocted in tiny nooks closer to the fireplace, the Albatross has always been a place for friends old & new, no matter who you are, to order a drink, find a table, and do what people are designed to do best—connect with one another. As far as we’re concerned, the Albatross Pub will always be that space for anyone who walks through our doors, but at this time more than ever, we need your help in keeping those doors open.
Due to unforeseen circumstances amid the COVID-19 outbreak and the closure of bars statewide, our doors have been shuttered since March 15th. Since we are not a restaurant, we have been unable to maintain operations via delivery or pickup services, and as a result are unable to work in any capacity. At a time when many iconic Berkeley businesses are already left vulnerable to rising property rates & rents, the lockdown is a kick in the pants that could close our doors for good. All proceeds from this GoFundMe will go toward immediate staff relief and payment of rent for the duration of the shelter in place.
We want to thank you for all of your support over the years. It’s YOU who makes the Albatross what it is, and we appreciate all of your contributions to the fabric of our community.
Help us continue on as Berkeley’s oldest pub. Here’s to another fifty-six years!
