Help Save Tallulah: Emergency Surgery Needed

Donation protected
Two years ago, we adopted Tallulah to fill a hole in our hearts. She had already been returned to the shelter multiple times — we were her fifth home — but the moment we met her, we knew she was meant to be ours. She came home with us that day, and we promised her she would never be abandoned again. Very quickly, something seemed “off.” Despite being listed as spayed, Tallulah kept going into heat — intensely, frequently, and with behaviors that made everyday life overwhelming for her. After repeated calls to the shelter and conversations with vets, the story became clear: her spay surgery likely left behind hidden ovarian or reproductive tissue. The only way to confirm would’ve been an invasive exploratory surgery, which felt unfair to put a then–9-year-old cat through when she wasn’t in distress. So we loved her through her quirks — the cycles, the mood swings, the wild little episodes. We had no idea this could later become life-threatening.

A few days ago, everything changed. Tallulah began spraying again for the first time in over a year. Then she vomited, stopped eating, and became frighteningly lethargic. When my husband came home, he realized that what I thought was water from her whiskers was actually urine… tinged with blood. We rushed her to the after-hours animal hospital. X-rays revealed what looked like an extremely large mass pressing into her bladder. She was given antibiotics, anti-nausea medication, and anti-inflammatories. We returned first thing in the morning to meet the traveling ultrasound specialist — hoping for clarity. Instead, we learned the worst-case scenario.

Her surgeon believes Tallulah has a severely infected, retained uterine stump and possibly wandering ovarian tissue hidden somewhere deep in her abdomen — potentially behind a kidney. These kinds of surgical mistakes are rare but devastating. The infection is dangerous, and her only chance is emergency surgery. But the truth is: they won’t know until they open her up. It could be a treatable infection that can be fixed today, a hidden ovary or tissue he can safely remove, or a tumor entangled with her ureters and colon, in which case the kindest decision may be to let her go while she is already under anesthesia. He spent nearly an hour preparing us for every possibility — including the possibility that the surgery might not save her. That we might not get to bring her home. That even if they find and remove the tissue, it could one day grow back. None of that mattered. She is our family. Of course we said yes.

We were approved for CareCredit, but in truth… we simply don’t have the means to absorb this. We are dealing with multiple financial pressures, medical expenses, car repairs, and tax issues — real-life things that hit all at once — and this cost is more than we can bear alone. We have never asked for help like this before. But today, we are humbly asking. If you are able to donate — any amount — it will go directly to Tallulah’s surgery and recovery. If you can’t donate, sharing this means the world to us. Tallulah finally found a forever home with us after so much instability in her early life. She is loving, silly, gentle, and endlessly trusting despite everything she’s been through. We just want the chance to give her the long, peaceful, safe life she deserves. Thank you for reading our story. Thank you for caring. And thank you — from the bottom of our hearts — for helping us fight for our girl. With love and gratitude, Laura & Chris
