Three-year-old Sunday should be spending her days chasing toys, soaking up the sunshine, and learning what it feels like to be truly loved.

Sunday was recently surrendered to the Bedford Humane Society. As we welcomed her into our care, we hoped her hardest days were behind her. But during her veterinary examination, we discovered something devastating—Sunday is heartworm positive.

Heartworm disease is a serious, life-threatening illness spread by mosquitoes. Left untreated, it slowly damages the heart and lungs and can ultimately become fatal. Thankfully, there is hope. With proper treatment, Sunday can recover and go on to live the long, happy life every dog deserves.
