This is the story of Sulayman Bojang, a 35-year-old young man from Sukuta, whom I have had the privilege of knowing and working with for about 6 years as a volunteer of the Household Disaster Resilience Project - HELP-Gambia and later a core member of the management. His kindness, humility, and willingness to go above and beyond have touched countless lives.
What makes his journey even more inspiring is that Sulayman gave so much of himself to others while quietly battling a life-threatening illness. Today, his own life hangs in the balance. Sulayman suffers from a severe heart condition called congenital pulmonary stenosis, complicated by right ventricular dysfunction. Doctors have confirmed that he urgently needs surgery abroad. After making a thorough search of medical service providers who are able to perform the procedure, he has found one in Turkey, but this will cost him an estimated 125,000 SEK (about USD 13,000) to cover travel, specialized medical treatment, and recovery expenses, which him and his family cannot afford.
Despite the daily struggles, Sulayman remains hopeful. He is currently on bisoprolol to manage symptoms, but this is only a temporary measure. Time is not on our side, the longer we wait, the greater the risk to his life.
Now, it is our turn to stand for him. Sulayman has spent his life giving, and this is the moment when we can give back. He needs us, and every contribution, big or small, can make the difference between life and loss.
