Hi everyone,
We are reaching out with heavy hearts and hopeful spirits to ask the community to support for our Babygirl Sky.
What began as a subtle limp slowly became a full medical journey that none of us were prepared for.
30 days ago Sky first began limping on her back leg and the time, it seemed manageable. We immediately took her to our veterinarian, where she was examined and treated conservatively. She was prescribed anti inflammatory medication and rest.
When the limp did not improve, we escalated care.
She underwent x rays to rule out fractures or malignancy. The imaging showed arthritic changes, particularly in her hip, and we were referred to an orthopaedic specialist. Based on her history and imaging, arthritis became the working diagnosis.
We doubled down on treatment.
Sky began physiotherapy. We followed every instruction. We monitored her closely. We adjusted her activity, her environment, and her care routine. We did everything we were told to do.
Then something changed.
Sky developed swelling in her leg. At first it was soft and fluid like but over a short time it became firm, hot, and painful. On Sunday she became lethargic, stopped eating and shortly after spiked a dangerously high fever.
What we were seeing no longer matched arthritis so rushed her to the emergency room.
That is when we learned the truth. Sky was not dealing with a simple orthopaedic issue. She was dealing with a serious infection.
Sky was admitted to a major animal hospital where she underwent extensive diagnostics, including advanced imaging. A CT scan revealed deep infection, abscess formation, and involvement of the tissues surrounding her hip and femur.
Doctors discovered and drained a significant abscess filled with pus, which explained the swelling, pain, fever, and sudden decline. She is currently being treated aggressively with IV antibiotics, pain control, and surgical drainage, with further procedures and monitoring required.
After last nights CT scan they discovered a mass in her hip and they are going to conduct a biopsy to ensure it isn't cancer.
There is a very real path to recovery, but it is not simple and it is not cheap.
The Financial Reality
We have already paid over $20,000 out of pocket to get Sky this far.
We have exhausted our savings, but giving up on Sky is not an option.
Here is a breakdown of just part of what we have paid so far:
Advanced imaging, CT scan, procedures, and specialist care:
$18,000
X rays
$1100
Emergency visits
$350
Hospitalization and medications
$1000
The hospital operates on a pay as you go model. Treatment continues to be prioritized only if we are able to fund the next steps.
To complete Sky’s healing journey, including continued hospitalization, antibiotics, surgery, recovery care, and rehabilitation, we are facing an additional estimated cost of $15,000.
We are asking for help so we can save her life, fully eradicate the infection, support her recovery, and help her walk again.
Every donation and every share matters more than we can express.
Sky is still here. She is fighting and she is responding to treatment. Her doctors believe she can recover.
We just need help getting her there.
Sky is our entire world. She helped my wife survive the trauma of losing her best friend, and she helped save me from alcoholism. Now it’s our turn to save her.
Thank you for taking the time to read Sky’s story and thank you for standing with us during the hardest moment we have ever faced as pet parents.
With gratitude and hope,
The King family.
