Shizza Hanif, mother of an 11 year old daughter in New Jersey, has type 1 diabetes. Over the years, it has taken a toll on her health. In February 2018, she was admitted to the hospital due to fluid retention and was diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is the gradual deterioration of kidney function. Her doctors informed her that she would eventually require dialysis or a kidney transplant. In the following months, she has developed thyroid issues, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, lost her vision, struggled with managing her blood pressure, and requires a lot of medication to keep her diabetes and CKD under management. On top of that, the risks of the two options she was given are so disheartening- including poor quality of life without a kidney transplant or lifelong dependency on medicines with a transplant. And so, through a lot of research and with deep faith, we have decided on a third option – stem cell therapy. This GoFundme account has been created to help pay for this treatment and all related expenses.
With the consultation of doctors, we weighed the pros and cons of dialysis and a transplant. Both are risky in her current health condition. The average life span on dialysis can be anywhere from 5 to 10 years. A kidney transplant is usually the recommended option. Shizza went for a transplant evaluation in April 2018 at St Barnabas Hospital in Livingston NJ. She was denied placement on the kidney transplant list because they deemed her to be too weak for the process. They advised her to come back after six months for another evaluation. The wait time for a transplant in New Jersey is approximately 7 years. Also, a transplant requires even more medication to suppress the immune system - and can lead to increased risk for certain cancers. Some medicines also raise blood sugar levels, and in Shizza’s case, her diabetes has already proven difficult to manage. There is also the risk of rejection, which would start the cycle of dialysis and transplant again. The ideal solution would be for her own kidneys to heal, so she can better manage the rest of her symptoms. We believe that new advancements in adipose based stem cell therapy is the answer for her.
Adipose based stem cell therapy involves the removal of fat cells from your own body and extracting the stem cells from them. The stem cells are then re-administered through an IV. After that, it is up to your stem cells to go to the damaged tissues in your body and start the healing and regeneration process. Based on her current health condition and a combined kidney function of 19% (out of 100%), she has been advised to undergo two stem cell therapy sessions. The money we are raising will go towards the costs of both of these procedures and related travel expenses.
We are planning to perform this therapy at a well known stem cell therapy center here in the United States. NSI Stem Cell is world renowned with an established reputation for helping kidney disease patients. Regenerative stem cell therapy has helped thousands of people improve their kidney function and lessen their dependency on medicines, thus slowing the progression of the disease. We are hopeful that this will pave the road to a longer, better quality of life for Shizza as well. We are grateful for any donation you provide, and please remember her in your prayers as well.
