Help Save Shane's Foot

Donation protected
On Labor Day, 2020, my Dad, Shane Rachal was enjoying a day on Lake Livingston with his wife Teri, as he often does, when he stepped on a 6” framing nail stuck in a piece of wood that was buried in the mud in 1 foot of water. The nail went straight through his sandals, into his heel, and straight into his heel bone. The nail and board seem to be from a piece of leftover construction from a bulkhead boathouse that was left to drift in the lake, finally settling along the shore of pine island. He immediately knew this injury would need more than his typical Rachal "super glue surgery."

If you’ve met my Dad you’d know he’s never met a stranger or anyone he couldn’t make smile. He’s known as the life of the party everywhere he goes. He’s the fun and life-loving father, husband, uncle, brother, son, father in law, and friend that anyone would be lucky to have. He is always there for the family and anyone who asks for a hand. He’s the guy that stops on the side of the road to help you with your flat tire and for damn sure wouldn’t let a board with a nail sticking out of it float away in a lake. Before he even began treatment he was already set on going back to the scene of the crime to try to find more nails so others don’t suffer the same fate.

Shane and his wife own a small local business. Shane has never been good at letting others help him and would do all the work himself if he could. Shane is only partially mobile it’s driving him crazy not being able to do the work he loves for the people he cares about and knowing the immense cost his treatment is wracking up.

In the 8 days in the hospital, he has suffered the worst pain in his life, had surgery on his foot to release pressure, remove diseased tissue, and got a piece of his heel bone removed for a biopsy. The biopsy results found multiple bacteria in his bone and tissue. One is a flesh-eating bacteria that brought in an infectious disease Dr. All of this delivered by the irresponsible nail in the lake. Before releasing him on 9/17/20 the doctors inserted a pick line into one of his veins for at-home antibiotic IV drip treatment for at least the next 3 weeks.

Shane isn’t out of the woods yet. He could still lose his foot, or worse if the infection isn’t managed properly. The total cost is still unknown however we are sure between home healthcare, and over a week long hospital stay with surgery will have racked up a very high bill.  On top of that, Shane hasn’t been and will be unable to work during the treatment since he can’t walk or put weigh on his foot which adds even more financial stress to the situation. As small business owners, they do not have health insurance to help assist. In which case we are asking everyone for a hand to help save my dad's foot, spirit, and livelihood. Out fishing on Lake Livingston before the accident.

Heel puncture after being cut open to clean. The side of his foot was cut during surgery to help drain the infection, those photos are too graphic to post online.
