Meet Sebastian

Sebastian is a pure barrel of laughs. He loves life, dinosaurs, toy cars, Peppa Pig, and whatever his big sister happens to be playing with. He has a smile that instantly lights up a room and melts hearts. Sidney and Sebastian are inseparable best friends who do everything together (and occasionally annoy each other, like all good siblings do).

On the surface, we look like any typical family, but behind closed doors, we face an unimaginable battle every single day. Sebastian lives with multiple complex, life-threatening heart conditions.

Sebastian's Journey So Far

At my 20-week scan, doctors discovered something was seriously wrong with Sebastian's heart. I was immediately transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), where his care began.

Sebastian arrived two months early via emergency C-section, rushed straight to GOSH while I recovered miles away. When specialists examined him, they discovered a terrifying combination of complex conditions:

Each condition is rare on its own; together, they present an exceptionally rare and perilous clinical picture.

At just two weeks old, Sebastian had a pulmonary band placed to stabilise him and buy him time to grow. For the next two years, the hospital became our second home. Every time he caught a simple cold or cough, it turned into a major emergency. Far too many times during the early hours of the morning, he was rushed to the hospital to be resuscitated.

At 18 months, surgeons attempted to close his VSD. The surgery went well initially, but five hours later, our world stopped. Sebastian suffered a catastrophic, 90-minute cardiac arrest. For an hour and a half, doctors and nurses fought tirelessly to bring him back before placing him on life support. A week later, an attempt to wean him off revealed his heart simply could not cope with the repair, forcing him back onto life support.

Surgeons laid out my only two choices: turn off life support and let nature take its course, or attempt a high-risk reversal surgery to undo the repair. I knew my choice instantly. I was not going to let my son die.

Against all odds, the high-risk reversal surgery succeeded. But the aftermath was gruelling - Sebastian spent four long months in intensive care and recovery before I could finally bring him home.

Those four months shattered my family. As a single mum, I was torn in two - trying to be at Sebastian's bedside in ICU while trying to comfort a terrified, heartbroken daughter at home who just wanted her mum and baby brother back.

The Devastating News & A Lifeline in Boston

Then came the news that every parent dreads. GOSH told me that they have exhausted all surgical options in the UK. All I could do was take Sebastian home, make memories and begin palliative care.

I refuse to accept that this is where my son's story ends. I spent months searching the globe for answers - and Boston Children's hospital gave me the miracle we need: hope.

The Plan: Double Switch Biventricular Repair

Specialists in Boston believe Sebastian is a candidate for a specialised Double Switch Biventricular Repair. This procedure reroutes his circulation into a working 1.5-ventricle system, balancing the workload across both chambers and providing the two-sided blood flow his body needs to thrive.

This operation offers Sebastian a real chance at a full, long life. My only barrier now is funding. The total cost including tests, scans, surgery, post operative care, travel and accommodation is estimated to be at least £400,000.
