Help Save Rescue Dog Penny!

Donation protected
Six weeks ago I was ending a long road trip out west and  heading back home to Michigan. While passing through a Navajo Nation (in northern Arizona) I spotted an animal running on the highway. I pulled over and the sweetest little dog immediately ran up to me. She was skin and bones and had severe bleeding (which I assumed was her heat cycle but was unsure). I rescued this dog and named her Penny. We travelled back to Michigan and had her assessed by a vet. Surprisingly, it seemed that Penny was in pretty good shape for having been a starving stray in the desert. It was determined that the bleeding was indeed her heat cycle. Penny was energetic and loved every person she saw. A couple of days before Thanksgiving, Penny started becoming lethargic. It was hard to get her to even stand to go outside or to eat. On Thanksgiving night I brought her to an emergency animal hospital in Nashville (where I now live). Penny’s heavy bleeding from her heat cycle was still a concern to me because it had lasted longer than a typical cycle. Upon arriving at the clinic, she was assessed and given an IV for hydration then discharged back to me a couple of hours later. I was to monitor her symptoms and bring her back if they worsened, but told that I didn’t need to worry. Penny slowly started becoming more energetic and more herself again. On December 14th Penny stopped eating all together and lost a significant amount of weight, exposing all of her ribs.  She slept 24 hours a day and was slowly becoming unresponsive. I took her back to the same emergency clinic and Penny was x-rayed and examined again. I was told that Penny was pregnant and she would need to be kept overnight for observation. Over the course of the night, Penny delivered four deceased and under developed puppies. I was told that she had another 3-4 puppies left to deliver and that some of them appeared to be more developed and heartbeats were detected. The “heat cycle” that had been determined prolonged but not totally abnormal was never a heat cycle. While admitted in the animal hospital, Penny tested extremely anemic due to the amount of blood she has been losing over the course of my owning her, so much so that her heart rate is dropping. I was told she needs a blood transfusion, but that it would only temporarily fix the problem. Her vet also recommended an emergency C-Section to remove the remaining puppies as well as an emergency spay in attempt to stop the bleeding. With Penny’s two emergency visits, an overnight stay, IV care, and potentially two emergency surgeries, the cost is extremely high (thousands of dollars). The vet warned me that Penny might be too weak to even live through surgeries right now and if she did that the bleeding not ever stop until she eventually has lost so much blood that she dies. Financially, my only choice was to take Penny home and monitor her for signs of labor to deliver the remaining puppies at home. Penny is currently on antibiotics for potential infection as well as several holistic approaches with diet to strengthen her system and stop the bleeding. I have reached out to several organizations in Nashville in attempt to receive help in caring for Penny and have reached a dead end. I’m hoping to use these funds to cover the already expensive medical bills she has had as well as a potential spay if her body is stronger soon. Anything is beyond appreciated. I’m also happily accepting veterinary advice, holistic approaches/natural remedies for sick dogs. Her outcome is not good and I’m doing anything and everything I can to change that.

Thank you so much!
