Help Save Rebecca's "Mountains" from Cancer

Donation protected

Let's get Rebecca "Socked In" healthy and back in the White Mountains.

Nobody expects a cancer diagnosis and Rebecca “Socked In” Sperry wasn’t expecting after finding a lump in her left breast that she would be diagnosed with Breast Cancer ten days after making this discovery. Three months into her second attempt at setting the women’s FKT (Fastest Known Time) of redlining The White Mountains in a single-year, (which entails hiking all of the trails in the White Mountain Guide, over 1,400 miles of trail) Rebecca received a diagnosis of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, stage two breast cancer. Receiving that diagnosis right in the middle of her pursuit of setting this record, wasn’t the only hurtle she faced. She received that diagnosis one week prior to starting graduate school full-time in pursuit of an MFA in Writing.

Because she is no longer working, Rebecca intended to take out additional student loan money and use it to pay her unexpected medical bills due to this diagnosis. The treatment plan is still up in the air as further tests and diagnoses are pending however, at minimum Rebecca will be undergoing a lumpectomy, radiation, and will need to take hormone blockers for ten years.

This page has been created because many people have reached out asking how they can help. Financially, Rebecca and her spouse are in a better place than many, but they have a $4,000.00 deductible that they will need to meet prior to insurance covering the treatments. Additionally, they have a $50.00 copay for every office visit, and within the last ten days, Rebecca has already had five, with two more scheduled into next week.

As much as they don’t want to ask for money, that is the best way to help Rebecca and her spouse, from a tangible standpoint. Kind, uplifting words are just as valuable as money, and always welcome. Rebecca will be having surgery in the upcoming weeks, and medical bills will inevitably start rolling in soon for the recent biopsy, MRI, and genetic testing. If you can and feel comfortable supporting her, donations of any amount are welcome, but not expected. Kind words and prayers are always welcome. Thank you for taking the time to read Rebecca’s story, and we are all hopeful that she will be back out on the trails doing what she loves most - hiking - soon!
